Ottawa Pumps Up Military Role in Citizenship Ceremonies
The Conservative government is strengthening the symbolic power of the military in public life by having a member of the Canadian Forces play a prominent role in citizenship ceremonies. In an operational bulletin issued earlier this year, the Department of Citizenship and Immigration said highlighting the service of members of the armed forces is a way to underline to every new Canadian the rights and responsibilities that come with citizenship.
Coming Into Force of Bill C-35, An Act to Amend the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
Bill C-35, An Act to Amend the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA), comes into force on June 30, 2011. The Bill strengthens the rules governing those who provide immigration advice or representation for a fee or other consideration. Instructions are given to the field on how to process applications during the 120 day transitional period which accompanies the coming into force of this legislation.
Updated Ministerial Instructions: New Cap on Federal Skilled Worker Applications
Effective July 1, 2011, a cap of 10,000 new Foreign Skilled Worker applications, without an offer of arranged employment, will be considered for processing each year. Within the 10,000 cap, a maximum of 500 new applications per occupation will be considered each year.

CSIC-accredited immigration consultants benefit Canadian society by helping Canada attract greater numbers of highly qualified immigrants, according to a study commissioned by the Canadian Migration Institute (CMI).
Thirteen outstanding community leaders and organizations are being recognized with Ontario’s 2011 Newcomer Champion Awards. These leaders will be recognized for their community-building contributions – such as supporting the settlement and integration of newcomers, and promoting Ontario’s many diverse cultures in their communities.
The City of Ottawa unveiled a new plan on Monday to attract immigrants and better integrate those who are already here. The plan brings together a dozen immigration and settlement agencies, as well as employers, social service providers and others.
