Globe and Mail – Alberta Praises New Foreign-Worker Rules
Canadian companies that want to bring in highly skilled foreign workers temporarily will be able to do so faster and pay them less under new federal immigration rules aimed at addressing the country’s persistent labour shortages. In areas of the country that are booming economically – particularly Alberta – companies are complaining about the lack of skilled workers, a problem that Ottawa has identified as one of Canada’s biggest policy challenges. Of 190,000 temporary foreign workers who entered Canada last year, 25,500 went to Alberta.
Toronto Star – Laws Against Veils, Mosques Fuel Anti-Muslim Prejudice, says Amnesty
European laws on what girls and women wear on their heads are encouraging discrimination against Muslims and against a religion that has been part of Europe’s fabric for centuries, Amnesty International says in a new report. […] Many Europeans wrongly assume all Muslims are immigrants, even though Islam has been a leading religion in Europe for centuries, the report notes. That makes the discrimination especially painful for the millions of Muslims born in Europe who are told to “go home” — when they have no other “home” to flee to.
BBC – Mexico-US Migration Slips After 40 Years of Growth
A Pew Hispanic Center study shows immigration began to slow five years ago and may have reversed by 2010. Economic factors, increased border control, and lower Mexican birth rates were all cited as factors. […]The downward trend includes a sharp reduction in the number of illegal Mexican migrants living in the US, the report says. The numbers of unauthorised Mexicans living in the US fell from nearly seven million in 2007 to 6.1 million in 2011, according to estimates based on US census data.
Hamilton Spectator – Immigration Applicants Upset at Ottawa’s Plan to Wipe Out Backlog
The applicants, many from China, India and the Philippines, wonder why those who patiently followed the rules and queued up for their rightful turn to come to Canada are now being unfairly punished. Ottawa says they can re-apply under the new skilled immigration program implemented after Feb. 27, 2008, where new regulations limit applications to a small number of occupations in need of highly skilled labour. But the new qualifying job fields are so narrowly defined that many affected applicants, like Xu, will automatically be shut out.
When it comes to bringing in foreign workers, there is no discouraging [Saskatchewan’s] Immigration Minister Rob Norris. He insisted last week that the federal government must increase to 6,000 the number of immigrants Saskatchewan can bring in through the provincial nominee program annually, up from the current limit of 4,000. On the surface, it seems the increase is legitimate. As Mr. Norris notes, Saskatchewan already has more than 11,000 jobs waiting for the newcomers.

Winnipeg Free Press – French Anti-Immigrant Far-Right Worries Critics After Soaring in Presidential Vote
The anti-immigrant far right emerged as a potentially major force in French politics with a record showing by its candidate Marine Le Pen in the first round of presidential elections. Le Pen, who rails against European unity and what she says is the Islamization of France, took third place with more than 18 per cent of the vote.
