Anyone relying on human smugglers to try to get into Canada is just “throwing their life savings away,” Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney said today. “We are sending a strong message to those who are thinking of using the services of criminal human smugglers to sneak into Canada: Don’t do it. They’ll just take your money but leave you stranded,” said Minister Kenney. “Canada has a generous and open legal immigration system, but those who try to get into Canada through the back door using human smugglers will not succeed and are wasting their money trying.” […] Operations that planned to smuggle Sri Lankans to Canada from Thailand and Indonesia have also been disrupted in the past two years. To support ongoing efforts, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced $12 million in funding in March 2012 to help fight human smuggling, including support for projects in Thailand and elsewhere in Southeast Asia.

Statistique Canada révèle que 2012 a été une année record pour la migration interprovinciale et l’immigration internationale en Alberta. Entre la mi-2011 à la mi-2012, la province a fait un gain net de près de 70 000 nouveaux arrivants dont 38 000 sont venus de l’étranger, et la croissance s’est poursuivie au troisième trimestre.

Gustavo Mejicanos from the Agricultural Workers Alliance in Manitoba said migrant farm workers in the province are all men. Mejicanos also said the men depend on the goodwill of their employers to return each year and their job in Manitoba is not guaranteed. […] Jody Read, a member of the Migrant Worker Solidarity Network, said some workers are paid for the amount of vegetables they pick, instead of an hourly wage. Last summer, she said one migrant farm worker had his hours cut and was suspended for two days after he told the farm’s management workers could not meet the quota of vegetables and were making less than minimum wage. […] The Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba does not track workplace injuries reported within the meat-packing and vegetable-packing industries by nationality, according to a response to a freedom-of-information request.

Les entreprises incapables de trouver des travailleurs spécialisés vont avoir un coup de pouce du gouvernement fédéral. Celui-ci commence cette semaine à accepter leurs demandes d’immigration. Citoyenneté et Immigration Canada compte accepter jusqu’à 3000 demandes pour la première année dans cette nouvelle catégorie d’immigrants exerçant un métier spécialisé.

Si le système canadien d’octroi d’asile n’était certainement pas le plus rapide, il était jusqu’à récemment parmi les plus justes et équitables. Or, depuis juin 2010, la tradition humanitaire d’asile du Canada connaît un important recul avec l’adoption du projet de loi C-31, mieux connu sous le nom de Loi visant à protéger le système d’immigration du Canada
