Emigrate – Burlington Ontario Ranks Best Livable Canadian City for Immigrants

In a Canadian survey into quality of life, the Ontario city of Burlington has scooped the pool for its lifestyle offerings to new migrants, followed closely by Calgary. […] Burlington won out for immigrants due to the fact that it already has a large population of incomers and offers inexpensive rental costs for new arrivals in the country. Formerly popular Vancouver lost out to Ottawa, Edmonton and other Western Canadian cites due to the western region’s economic strength. Meanwhile, concerns over immigration fraud are increasing, with Immigration Minister Jason Kenney introducing a Fraud Prevention Month backed up by advertisement, TV commercials and a video on the immigration website warning about marriage fraud and marriages of convenience.

Fort McMurray Today – Foreign Workers Easier Route than Canadian Apprentices: AFL

The latest federal budget is “an insult to Canadians,” says Alberta Federation of Labour president Gil McGowan, who says the government’s promise to promote Canadians over the Temporary Foreign Worker program will not encourage the private sector to hire more Canadians. “It has become far too easy for companies, especially construction companies like in Fort McMurray, to choose foreign workers over the next generation of Canadian workers,” says McGowan. “In its current form, it’s way too easy for employers to fill positions with foreign workers as opposed to taking on apprentices.” Thursday’s budget primarily shifts Ottawa’s support behind trades programs to drive Canada’s economy, encouraging the private sector to play a bigger role in recruiting workers and training unemployed workers for in-demand jobs.

Winnipeg Free Press – Federal Takeover Quashes Immigrant Service

The Immigrant Centre is no longer offering a service that helped people navigate Manitoba’s Provincial Nominee Program, thanks to a shift in settlement services that’s seen the federal government take over. […]  Many Winnipeggers went to the centre for help with nominee applications, said DeVilla, a Filipino community leader. […] The province said it will pick up the slack and help people with questions at the provincial nominee program offices on Notre Dame Avenue downtown. It will run community information sessions starting on April 2, set up individual appointments with application advisers, and help people fill out online application forms, the statement said.
