Montreal Gazette – Klein: A Fiscal Legacy Felt Across the Country

Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Jason Kenney told CTV’s Power Play that Klein set the template for fiscal restraint elsewhere in the country by getting elected multiple times on a platform of tough fiscal discipline. “Ralph led the country towards fiscal responsibility,” he said, adding that Klein’s legacy is one of “common sense in politics, and a legacy of proving that you can govern according to your convictions and people will follow.”

Ottawa Citizen – Canada to Spend $100M to Woo Foreign Students

The Canadian government is hoping to corner the market on foreign students by making a significant investment into Canada’s education brand. The recently tabled federal budget directs $10 million over the next two years to the effort – a large increase from the funding it set aside for marketing education from 2007 to 2012, when it budgeted $1 million each year. […] Foreign Affairs spokesman John Babcock said the extra funding is a “very positive signal,” and that the federal government will continue cooperating with the provinces to strengthen the international education strategy. Canada is already a top destination for foreign students. According to the budget, some 239,000 students in 2010 contributed $8 billion to the economy, making them a rich vein for colleges and universities to tap.

The Guardian [Charlottetown] – Newcomers Offer Promise and Optimism

Controversy surrounding the province’s administration of the provincial nominee program may have absorbed so much of Islanders’ attention over the last few years that they may have overlooked its benefits. Those benefits were clearly on display recently at the citizenship ceremony in Charlottetown where the largest group ever was sworn-in as new Canadians. It was a great day for them and the province. Similar ceremonies were held elsewhere across Canada a week ago Friday, but P.E.I.’s was the largest – 121 people from 34 countries were sworn in. Most of those taking the oath of citizenship at the emotional ceremony came to the province through the PNP program, which over the years has been the subject of controversy because of the province’s management of it.
