Faute d’action internationale dans le domaine des droits humains, le monde est en train de devenir de plus en plus dangereux pour les réfugiés et les migrants, a déclaré Amnesty International le 23 mai à l’occasion de la sortie de son rapport annuel sur la situation des droits humains dans le monde. Les droits de millions de personnes qui ont fui les conflits et les persécutions, ou qui ont quitté leur pays en quête de travail et d’une vie meilleure, pour eux et leur famille, sont bafoués, a dénoncé l’organisation. Partout dans le monde, les États se montrent davantage désireux de protéger leurs frontières nationales que les droits de leurs citoyens et ceux des hommes et des femmes qui viennent chercher refuge ou de meilleures chances chez eux […].
«Tu es rom? Tu vis dans une caravane? Est-ce que tes parents volent? Es-tu comme Esmeralda?» Chaque fois qu’elle dit qu’elle est rom, Dafina doit répondre à ce genre de questions. «J’en ai pour au moins 25 minutes d’explications!», me dit-elle en riant. Radio-Canada – Un organisme d’Ottawa s’occupera des immigrants francophones du nord de l’Ontario
Radio-Canada a appris que le Réseau de soutien à l’immigration francophone du nord de l’Ontario, un programme coordonné par le Contact interculturel francophone de Sudbury (CIFS), sera temporairement géré par un organisme d’Ottawa. Citoyenneté et Immigration Canada a refusé, en février, la demande de subvention totalisant 430 000 $ de l’organisme sudburois. « C’est un choc, parce qu’on ne s’attendait pas à ça », déclare la directrice générale du CIFS, Meron Yeshoa. […] La subvention représentait près de 80 % de son budget. En plus du réseau du Nord, elle permettait de financer le programme du guichet unique, qui lui prendra fin le 30 juin. Il s’agit des deux seuls services d’aide aux immigrants francophones dans le nord de l’Ontario. Le conseil économique et social d’Ottawa-Carleton indique qu’il coordonnera le réseau du Nord jusqu’en septembre.
Burnaby News Leader – Refugee Issues in Focus in Burnaby
For years, Burnaby was the province’s largest recipient of government-sponsored refugees—up to 37 per cent of those who came to B.C. to escape civil war, torture, massacres and other dangers. The city no longer carries that mantle—Surrey now receives the most, thanks to lower housing costs there—but from May 30 to June 1 it will host a gathering of those tasked with advocating for refugees. That’s when upwards of 300 delegates are expected to attend the Canadian Council for Refugees national conference at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown.
Citizenship and Immigration Canada Statement – Minister Kenney Commends RCMP on Immigration Fraud Charges Laid
The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, made the following statement today upon learning that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Immigration and Passport Special Investigation Section has laid charges against a suspected “ghost” immigration consultant and his accomplice for defrauding nearly 400 people from China. […] The Cracking Down on Crooked Consultants Act makes it a crime for anyone that is not a member of the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council, a provincial or territorial bar, or Quebec notaries to advise, represent or consult clients on immigration matters before the Government of Canada for a fee.
Brampton Guardian – Fundraiser Will Help Alleviate Plight of Refugees
Brampton resident Madiha Naseem underscores the plight of refugees around the world by narrating the story of a 22-year-old Afghan refugee paralyzed by polio he acquired as a result of poor sanitation conditions in the refugee camp. The man wanted to go to school but couldn’t because of his disability. Naseem along with a journalist were able to help him. The University of Toronto Refugee Alliance (UTRA), which Naseem founded with couple of her friends in 2011, donated a laptop to Zai and helped him enrol for a computer class. Zai now uses the laptop as a tool to create poetry.
