The Record – Newer Refugees Struggle More Over Time
Waterloo Region has resettled 5,444 international refugees over the past decade. To assess how they fare over time, the newspaper mined a national database that links immigration and tax records. Statistics Canada keeps the database and upon request extracted individual tax filings between 1996 and 2010, stripping identities. All incomes are expressed in constant 2010 dollars to eliminate inflation, compare years and reflect real changes. […] The analysis shows that refugees who landed after 2000 start with average incomes almost $1,000 higher than earlier refugees. This may reflect stronger government and community support in their first year here. However, by three full years here that advantage has been erased and new refugees are behind earlier refugees by just over $1,000. The Record – Local Services Ease Often Painful Transition for Refugees
Gassim and Alicja Muszynski, associate professor of sociology and legal studies at the University of Waterloo, joined forces to create a program to empower the African refugee and immigrant community. The program, Celebrating Diversity in Waterloo Region, received just over $400,000 in federal funding from Citizenship and Immigration Canada for a three-year project. So far, a tool kit to help parents with bullying has been created, and focus groups will be held with immigrant and refugee women and youth. Workshops on mental health issues, parenting and health and wellness will also be offered.

Un nombre croissant d’immigrants reçus ont du mal à compléter la dernière étape avant de devenir citoyens : passer l’examen de citoyenneté. Le taux d’échec a bondi de manière significative depuis que Citoyenneté et Immigration Canada a introduit de nouveaux tests, plus difficiles, les 28 mars et 23 juillet 2012. Selon des statistiques obtenues grâce à la Loi sur l’accès à l’information et diffusées par CBC News Network dans le cadre de l’émission Power & Politics, ce surtout les immigrants issus de la catégorie du « regroupement familial » qui, selon les analyses du ministère, possèdent en général un niveau d’éducation inférieur à ceux issus de la catégorie « économique », qui peinent à réussir les tests.
L’Express – Turban, patkas et keski : le soccer québécois lève l’interdiction
Le turban sikh sera permis sur les terrains de soccer québécois. La Fédération de soccer du Québec a levé samedi l’interdiction qu’elle avait récemment imposée après avoir reçu une clarification vendredi de la position de la FIFA, la Fédération internationale. La directrice de la Fédération québécoise de soccer (FSQ), Brigitte Frot, a reconnu que l’organisme avait pris connaissance de la décision de la FIFA de permettre aux joueurs de soccer canadien de porter un turban « avec une immense satisfaction et un grand soulagement ». Mme Frot a affirmé que la controverse a pris une ampleur qu’elle n’avait pas anticipée. Lors d’un point de presse, elle a souligné que l’intervention de la fédération n’avait rien à voir avec les questions religieuses ou les enjeux politiques.

Ottawa plans to bring in roughly five million more immigrants over the next two decades. They will alter the nation’s racial and ethnic makeup to such a degree that, by 2031, according to Statistics Canada, today’s visible minorities will be the visible majority in Toronto (62 per cent) and Vancouver (59)
La Presse – USA: 365 000 jeunes immigrés sans papiers évitent l’expulsion
Un total de 365 237 jeunes immigrés arrivés illégalement aux États-Unis avant leurs 16 ans ont pu bénéficier d’un programme proposé par le président Barack Obama il y a un an, selon des chiffres obtenus par l’AFP vendredi. La mesure, adoptée en août dernier, permet l’obtention d’un permis de travail temporaire et un report de deux ans de la procédure d’expulsion pour les mineurs arrivés sur le territoire américain avant l’âge de 16 ans, âgés de moins de trente ans au moment de leur candidature au programme, scolarisés ou ayant obtenu leur baccalauréat et n’ayant aucun antécédent judiciaire. Après l’adoption de cette mesure, 539 000 demandes sont parvenues au département de la Sécurité intérieure, selon les données fournies par les services américains d’immigration (USCIS).
