Government of Ontario News Release – Ontario Helping More Francophone Immigrants Succeed
Ontario is expanding its English as a Second Language (ESL) program in communities across the province to provide francophone immigrants with more opportunities to succeed and find work. By expanding its ESL program to newcomers whose first language is French, Ontario will add approximately 1,000 additional learners to the current enrollment of 120,000 immigrants who access tuition-free language training each year. These programs are currently available through 37 local English and French school boards, at over 300 locations across the province
London Community News – Roundtable on Immigration Set for Dec. 17
The London Multicultural Club (LMC) plans to air the concerns of underemployed immigrants to Ontario’s minister of citizenship in mid-December. According to the LMC, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Michael Coteau will take part in a roundtable discussion “for professionals and immigration issues” at Goodwill Industries Dec. 17 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. “There is a huge multicultural community in the city of London with university degrees and/or professional careers in their own country who have many concerns as well as many newcomers who are still struggling with immigration issues and who have many compelling issues,” the announcement reads.
The Globe and Mail – Canada’s Population Continues to Flow Westward
Ontario still receives the most immigrants of any province, but “this trend has tended to diminish in the last few years,” the [Statistics Canada] study said. In the quarter century up until 2008, Ontario was home to, on average, between 44 and 60 per cent of all immigrants to Canada. This past year, that ebbed to 40 per cent – the second-lowest proportion since record-keeping began in 1971. Meanwhile, two provinces in the past year received a record number of immigrants: Quebec (56,000) and Alberta (36,800), and Saskatchewan posted its second-highest number of immigrants (9,800). […] International migration remains the key driver of population growth. In 2012-13, net international migration was responsible for two-thirds of Canada’s population increase.
La Liberté – Elle devait être expulsée vendredi : Une Algérienne sursitaire au Canada
Wassila Djemaï, une Algérienne arrivée au Canada en 2011, devait être expulsée, hier, après que sa demande d’asile eut été rejetée par la commission d’immigration et du statut de refugié. Mais après avoir usé de son dernier recours, en déposant mardi une requête devant la cour fédérale, celle-ci lui a accordé, jeudi, un sursis. Mme Djemaï demandait de surseoir à la décision d’expulsion, qu’elle ne remet pas en cause, le temps qu’elle termine ses traitements chimiothérapiques. Wassila Djemaï, alors qu’elle a décroché un contrat de travail, en attendant que sa situation administrative se régularise, découvre, surprise, qu’elle est atteinte d’un cancer du sein invasif et “inopérable”.

La Presse – Des travailleurs étrangers temporaires s’unissent pour défendre leurs droits
Les nouveaux venus, qui s’amènent au Canada après y avoir déniché du boulot, disposent désormais d’une forme supplémentaire de soutien. L’Association des travailleuses et travailleurs étrangers temporaires (ATTÉT) a été officiellement mise sur pied, samedi, à Montréal. L’objectif de l’organisation consistera à défendre les droits de ses membres à la grandeur du Québec pour éviter qu’ils ne soient victimes d’exploitation. L’ATTÉT sera chapeautée par le Centre des travailleurs et travailleuses immigrants de Montréal (CTTI).
