Leader-Post – Immigration Recruiters, Consultants List Available

It is now easier for those needing recruiting and immigration consultant services to find licensed professionals in the province. “(Before) they could hang up a certificate and you didn’t know,” Neelu Sachdev, executive director of the Regina Immigrant Women Centre, said. The government of Saskatchewan has published a list of immigrant consultants and recruiters who can provide services under the Foreign Worker Recruitment and Immigration Services Act. FWRISA came into effect on Oct. 11. Recruiters work with employers to find foreign workers jobs. Immigration consultants provide services to foreign nationals wanting to come to the province. Sachdev said this list is a good resource for people to know they are getting service from a qualified professional. Manitoba, Nova Scotia and Ontario already have similar lists. […] Under FWRISA, newcomers who do not use licensed consultants and recruiters may lose protection measures, such as compensation for financial losses and having their application refused for the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program.

A francophone organization on P.E.I. has recruited three men from Europe for hard-to-fill jobs, with both economic and cultural benefits in mind. It’s the first time P.E.I.’s Cooperative d’intégration francophone has recruited francophone immigrants.

Expat Forum – Immigrants with Degrees Find it Harder to Find Professional Jobs in Canada

Highly educated immigrants to Canada are facing more difficulties in accessing professional and management occupations than in the middle of the 1990s, according to researchers. A team from the University of Toronto analysed trends in the success of immigrants with university degrees in census data from 1996, 2001, and 2006 and have identified a ‘brain waste’ trend. They discovered that although recent immigrants are much more likely to have university degrees than earlier immigrants, lower proportions are obtaining high skilled jobs. […] Educated immigrant women fared even worse, with their success rate in obtaining high skilled jobs decreasing from 34.6% in 1996 to 34.4% in 2006. The success rate for native born women with similar education levels increased from 64.5% in 1996 to 66.9% in 2006. […] The researchers also found that the proportion of university educated immigrants working in low skill occupations such as sales and manual labour, has steadily increased since 1996.

Richmond News – Chinese Groups on Opposite Sides of Immigration Fence

Chinese groups are at odds with each other over the federal government’s move to kill off the wealthy immigrant fast-track program. A group of around 50 ethnic Chinese community members — calling themselves the The Alliance of the Guard of Canadian Values — held a meeting last Saturday at the West Richmond Community Centre to back the government’s move to close the investor-class program, which would expedite wealthy, would-be immigrants through the residency process. The position of the alliance, made up of doctors, lawyers, seniors and residents, is in contrast to that of another Chinese community group, which met at a Richmond hotel last month to protest the program’s cull and threatened to sue the government.
