Global Post – Immigration Consultants Offer to Pair Firms with Temporary Foreign Workers
Immigration consultants, many of them in Western Canada, are apparently now specializing in pairing up employers and temporary foreign workers. One online advertisement placed in several provinces even pledges to help temporary foreign workers find employers, instead of the other way around. […] Employment Minister Jason Kenney, who took aim against immigration consultants when he helmed the immigration department, is vowing to crack down on abusers of the temporary foreign workers program. A new slate of rule changes is expected to be announced soon, including greater auditing powers for federal inspectors as they hunt down abusers of the program. Other immigration consultants in the West are advertising similar services regarding temporary foreign workers on Kijiji and other job sites. Most didn’t return calls from the media, or hung up when asked about the nature of their business.

Le matériel promotionnel pour le salon organisé par Working Abroad Newcomers Network à la fin juin à Lyon et Toulouse fait valoir aux entreprises qu’elles peuvent embaucher ces travailleurs sans avoir en main un «avis relatif au marché du travail» (AMT). […] Parmi les employeurs canadiens prenant part à ce salon de l’emploi en France figurent les gouvernements du Manitoba et de la Saskatchewan, Loblaws, Les Aliments Maple Leaf et la Banque Scotia, indiquent les documents promotionnels.
Citoyenneté et Immigration Canada – Communiqué – Calgary accueille davantage de nouveaux citoyens
Calgary a accueilli 1 164 nouveaux Canadiens provenant de plus de 100 pays au cours du dernier mois, soit plus de quatre fois le nombre de personnes qui ont obtenu la citoyenneté canadienne à Calgary en avril de l’an dernier, mois au cours duquel 284 nouveaux citoyens ont prêté serment. Le grand nombre de nouveaux citoyens qui ont été accueillis ce mois-ci à Calgary démontre que le gouvernement du Canada travaille à améliorer l’efficacité du programme de citoyenneté, aidant ainsi plus de personnes à réaliser plus rapidement leur rêve de devenir Canadien. Les changements proposés par le gouvernement dans le projet de loi C-24, la Loi renforçant la citoyenneté canadienne, réduiront les délais d’attente en simplifiant le processus décisionnel concernant la citoyenneté. On s’attend à ce que ces changements fassent passer les délais de traitement moyens des demandes de citoyenneté à moins d’un an et à ce que l’arriéré actuel diminue de plus de 80 p. 100 d’ici 2015-2016.

Citizenship and Immigration Canada News Release – Growing Number of New Citizens in Scarborough
More than 3,200 new citizens from approximately 135 countries were welcomed to Canada in Scarborough over the past month—more than double the number of individuals who became citizens in Scarborough in April 2013. The continually high number of new citizens welcomed in Scarborough demonstrates how the government is working to make the citizenship program more efficient, helping more people realize their dream of becoming Canadian sooner. The government’s proposed changes in Bill C-24, the Strengthening Canadian Citizenship Act, will further reduce wait times by streamlining the decision-making process for citizenship. It is expected that those changes will bring the average processing time for citizenship applications down to under one year and that the current backlog will be reduced by more than 80 percent by 2015-2016.
Guardian – Cambodia is No Place to Resettle the Refugees Australia Does Not Want
In proposing to resettle Australia’s refugees in third countries, the Australian government is turning the humanitarian process of refugee resettlement into a politically motivated form of refugee deterrence. The Cambodian government this week agreed in principle to resettle some of Australia’s refugees from Nauru. But the small number of refugees already in Cambodia face serious problems, including difficulty finding work because of language barriers and discrimination, lack of access to citizenship, and a corrupted legal system that fails to protect their rights. The conditions are so challenging that most hold out hope for future resettlement in a country like Australia. […] Dumping refugees in under-resourced, aid dependent countries can have disastrous consequences for all involved. Only a well developed resettlement program, coupled with a supportive and safe environment, can address the long term needs of both the refugee and the resettlement country.
