Pique – Whistler and Squamish Businesses State Their Case for Foreign Workers

It was a “good, constructive exchange of opinions,” said minister of employment and social development Jason Kenney, after a meeting of the minds today between himself and the Whistler and Squamish chambers. The roundtable discussion, spearheaded by the Whistler and Squamish chambers, focused on the federal Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP), and how recent changes to its structure affect businesses in the corridor. While the chambers had an opportunity to make their cases, Kenney told reporters there were no immediate changes coming to the program as a result of the discussion. […]For the Whistler Chamber, the concerns arise in how Whistler’s unemployment rate is calculated – using a 2013 average of 6.7 per cent for the mainland southwest region, which includes Metro Vancouver. During his speech to chamber members following the roundtable discussion, Kenney said there may be room for exceptions to the general rule. “We realize there are places… where there is a really hot labour market surrounded by high unemployment, so we are prepared on a case-by-case basis to look at situations like that,” he said.

Kelowna Now – Major Funding Investment Helps Integrate Skilled Newcomers to B.C.

Thanks to $3.3 million in federal funding over the next three years, more skilled immigrants will be able to find jobs in B.C. The federal government and the province have renewed the Foreign Qualifications Recognition (FQR), which will help speed up and improve the process of recognizing foreign credentials and qualifications of immigrants. By 2022, B.C. is expecting one million job openings because of people retiring and the province’s growing economy, immigrants are expected to fill about one-third of those openings. A good chunk of those available jobs will be in LNG plants with more than 100,000 openings expected. […] B.C. sees about 38,000 newcomers each year.

City News – Anti-Immigration Flyer Targeting Sikhs Surfaces in Brampton

A flyer targeting immigrants and Sikhs has surfaced in Brampton. A line on the flyer says, “Stop the Madness,” and asks Brampton residents to “say no to the massive third world invasion of Canada,” saying immigrants will reduce white Canadians to a minority. It also has the face of a Sikh man covered by a “prohibited” symbol. This comes after another flyer was handed out in Brampton in April with pictures of Sikhs and the caption, “Is this what you really want?” It was printed by a group called Immigration Watch Canada, based in B.C. The co-founder of the Vancouver-based group said he did not authorize the latest flyer. He said that the group agrees with the overall message but said the picture may have gone too far. “I don’t agree with them putting the picture of the Sikh in the circle,” Dan Murray said. The current flyer has the organization’s logo printed at the bottom. […] The flyer says immigration is to blame for lowered wages, increased poverty and unemployment, and reducing whites to a minority in their own country.

Toronto Star – Roma Refugee Family in Sanctuary Seeks Freedom to Testify Against Lawyer

Jozsef Pusuma, his wife, Timea Darozci, and 6-year-old daughter, Viktoria, have lived in a 20-by-20-foot room at an undisclosed Toronto church for more than 32 months. […] The family, originally from Hungary, is one of 18 complainants against Toronto lawyer Viktor Hohots, the subject of an ongoing disciplinary proceeding by the Law Society of Upper Canada for failure to “adequately prepare” a defence of his clients’ asylum claims. […] “Jozsef and Timea have finally been summoned to appear as witnesses in the lawyer’s misconduct case. They have been waiting for this moment for almost three years now, because it’s their chance for vindication,” said the family’s new lawyer, Andrew Brouwer, of the Refugee Law Office clinic. “But now they are facing a Catch-22. They are required by law to attend the hearing. If they don’t, they could be arrested for contempt of court. But if they do go, they face arrest for deportation the moment they set foot outside of the church.”
