Radio Canada International – Une entreprise d’Ottawa devra payer une amende pour avoir discriminé un candidat
Cleaning and Restoration a agi de façon discriminatoire envers un demandeur d’emploi d’origine étrangère en lui donnant comme explication du refus de sa candidature, que la compagnie n’embauche que des hommes de race blanche. L’entreprise devra payer 8000$ plus les intérêts à l’homme qui s’est vu refuser un emploi en juin 2013 – Le tribunal a ordonné à la compagnie de nettoyage de payer ce montant à Malek Bouraoui pour des «violations multiples» de ses droits en vertu de la Charte des droits et libertés du Canada. Après avoir présenté sa candidature pour un emploi chez la Ottawa Valley Cleaning and Restoration, Bouraoui a dit avoir reçu un appel d’un homme appelé Jesse, qui a demandé à savoir son pays d’originaire ainsi que s’il était blanc ou noir. Bouraoui, qui est noir, a témoigné avoir dit à l’homme au téléphone qu’il n’était pas né au Canada. Cependant, M Bouraoui dit avoir été trop choqué pour répondre à l’autre question à propos de sa race.
Citoyenneté et Immigration Canada – Communique – Favoriser l’immigration de francophones au Canada
Le ministre de la Citoyenneté et de l’Immigration du Canada, Chris Alexander, a rencontré des intervenants et des dirigeants communautaires de Winnipeg dans le but de discuter des moyens que le gouvernement pourrait prendre pour accroître l’immigration de francophones au Canada. Lors de ces rencontres, le ministre Alexander a pris l’engagement de lancer, au cours des prochains mois, des consultations dans le but d’augmenter le nombre d’immigrants d’expression française qui s’établissent dans les communautés francophones hors Québec, ainsi que de renforcer la vitalité et le dynamisme de ces communautés. Citoyenneté et Immigration Canada collaborera avec les provinces et les territoires ainsi qu’avec les communautés francophones et les employeurs en vue de favoriser l’intégration réussie des immigrants d’expression française qui choisissent de faire du Canada leur nouveau chez soi.
Times Colonist – Sanctuary Movement Revived in Arizona as Immigrants Move in to Churches to Avoid Deportation
Robles Loreto is a 41-year-old Mexican immigrant who lacks legal status and is facing deportation after getting pulled over for a traffic infraction four years ago. She has vowed to remain in Southside Presbyterian Church until federal immigration authorities grant her leniency. Robles Loreto is the third immigrant to take sanctuary in a church this year in Arizona, reviving a popular movement from the 1980s that sought to help Central American migrants fleeing civil wars stay in the U.S. by letting them live inside churches, where immigration officials generally do not arrest people. Although the latest version of the movement so far appears to have only taken place in Arizona, national immigration advocates say it’s about to grow, propelled by activists hoping the sanctuary movement will draw attention to the lack of immigration reform. The Rev. Noel Andersen, a national grassroots co-ordinator for Church World Service, said cities such as Denver, Portland, New York and Washington, D.C., are organizing and preparing for the potential of more migrants taking sanctuary in churches.
Al Jazeera – Immigrant Vote Could Sway Tight Scottish Independence Referendum
With polls suggesting a neck-and-neck race as Scotland heads toward a Sept. 18 referendum on independence from Britain, the ballot slips of people of non-Scottish origin could prove decisive. And opinion seems divided among those roughly 880,000 who on census forms identify themselves as other than white Scottish. […] While all this weighs on the result of a binary choice on the ballot, the decision will be made by a Scottish population that has grown more diverse than ever. The 2011 census allowed people to report multiple identities […] The survey revealed that 84 percent identified as white Scottish. The remaining sixth was a diverse mix of other ethnicities that has increased by one-third in the past decade. […] 94 percent of respondents born in the country reported identifying with a Scottish nationality, according to new research by the Center on Dynamics of Ethnicity. Groups with more-established roots in Scotland are more likely to choose Scottish as a national identity. For example, 49 percent of Pakistani Scots identify with the country, but recently arrived Polish residents mostly identify with a non-U.K. identity.

Les conservateurs ont fait de la reconnaissance des titres de compétences des nouveaux arrivants l’une de leurs priorités, mais les immigrants ont déclaré lors d’une recherche commandée par le gouvernement qu’ils faisaient face à des « obstacles majeurs » les empêchant de dénicher un emploi même quand leurs compétences sont reconnues. Dans un rapport préparé plus tôt cette année par Environics Research, les nouveaux arrivants de 12 groupes de discussion à travers le pays ont déclaré que d’autres problèmes les empêchaient de trouver du boulot. Les participants – incluant des médecins et des ingénieurs – ont dit que la barrière de la langue et le prérequis d’avoir de l’expérience au Canada mentionné dans les offres d’emploi posaient les plus gros problèmes. Ils ont mentionné qu’ils croyaient que la demande d’expérience au Canada était « une manière déguisée pour un employeur de favoriser les personnes nées au Canada », selon le rapport. Les participants ont aussi pointé vers le manque de contacts au Canada et « les difficultés dans les interactions sociales courantes en raison de la langue et des différences culturelles ».
CBC – Syria Failed “On Every Front” by International Community
The war in Syria has created millions of refugees and killed more than 191,000 people in the last three years, yet the international response is failing in terms of aid, resettlement offers and the continuation of arms transfers, Oxfam says in a report released Monday. […] Late last month, the UN aid agency UNHCR announced the number of Syrian refugees who have left their homeland had reached three million […] Oxfam’s report says countries such as Lebanon and Jordan are at the breaking point when it comes to supporting Syrian refugees. The agency is calling for five per cent of the projected refugee population to be resettled or offered humanitarian admission to wealthy countries by the end of 2015. Each of those countries should take their fair share of the total based on the size of their economy, the agency says. Germany, Australia and Austria are the only wealthy countries to have offered to relocate their fair share of refugees so far. Almost all the other rich countries are falling short, the report says.
