Sun News – Trudeau Blasted Over Citizenship Comments
Immigration and Citizenship Minister Chris Alexander blasted Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau for saying Canadians with dual citizenship should not be stripped of their citizenship if they go overseas to fight with ISIS. In London, Ontario Thursday, Trudeau said Canada should not have “two-tiered” citizenship. Alexander thinks it’s incomprehensible that a national party leader would say that the law, which passed in June and allows the government to revoke citizenship, should be reversed or weakened. […] Trudeau: “The idea that some people, because of behaviour – however reprehensible – could have their citizenship removed, makes it conditional for anyone who gains Canadian citizenship without having been born here. That’s against the principle that has made Canada great – that a Canadian is a Canadian is a Canadian.”
Les détenteurs de passeports diplomatiques désormais plus surveillés
Le gouvernement fédéral a discrètement resserré les règles de voyage avec des passeports spéciaux et diplomatiques après le lancement d’une révision ordonnée par le premier ministre Stephen Harper, qui a été menée à la suite d’allégations d’utilisation inappropriée de ces documents pour des voyages d’affaires et des déplacements personnels. Des changements supplémentaires devraient résulter de la révision qui se poursuit et qui vise à déterminer qui devrait être autorisé à détenir ces pièces d’identité reconnues par Ottawa. Les passeports diplomatiques, qui sont facilement reconnaissables grâce à leur couverture rouge, sont traditionnellement remis à des hauts représentants gouvernementaux, à des diplomates et à des délégués canadiens qui sont associés à diverses organisations ou qui participent à certaines conférences.
Radio-Canada – Ottawa veut plus d’immigrants francophones
Ottawa compte mettre en place des moyens d’attirer davantage d’immigrants francophones ailleurs qu’au Québec. Le ministre de l’Immigration, Chris Alexander, a annoncé mardi que des consultations se tiendraient au cours des prochains mois afin de stimuler l’immigration francophone au pays. En 2012, les communautés francophones du Canada anglais ont accueilli 3685 immigrants s’exprimant dans la langue de Molière, ce qui représente une augmentation de 4 % par rapport à 2011, selon les données du ministère. L’arrivée d’immigrants francophones dans les provinces où la langue est en situation minoritaire permet d’endiguer le phénomène d’assimilation linguistique, a fait valoir Louis Alain, directeur général du Conseil de développement économique des municipalités bilingues du Manitoba (CDEM). Les nouveaux arrivants permettent aussi aux francophones de maintenir un certain poids démographique au sein de leur communauté, a ajouté M. Alain.
FCFA – Communiqué – Déclaration de la présidente de la FCFA sur l’annonce de consultations gouvernementales sur l’immigration francophone
La présidente de la Fédération des communautés francophones et acadienne (FCFA) du Canada, Marie-France Kenny, a émis la déclaration suivante quant à l’engagement pris hier par le ministre de la Citoyenneté et de l’Immigration, l’honorable Chris Alexander, de lancer au cours des prochains mois des consultations relativement à l’immigration francophone : « Nous sommes très contents que le ministre Alexander se soit engagé à tenir des consultations pour accroître le nombre d’immigrants francophones qui s’établissent dans nos communautés. Au cours des 15 dernières années, nos communautés se sont prises en main dans ce dossier en créant des services d’accueil et d’intégration en français et surtout en mettant sur pied 13 Réseaux en immigration francophone qui travaillent dans neuf provinces et deux territoires sur le recrutement, l’accueil et l’intégration de nouveaux arrivants de langue française.
Ottawa Citizen – “Stateless” Ottawa-Born Man Loses Bid for Citizenship
Ottawa-born Deepan Budlakoti, a 24-year-old who has never lived outside this country, has lost his bid to be declared a Canadian citizen by the Federal Court of Canada. In a decision released Wednesday, Justice Michael Phelan ruled that Budlakoti, born to employees of the Indian Embassy in October 1989, does not have a claim to Canadian citizenship by virtue of his birth. Unlike others, children born to foreign diplomatic staff in Canada do not automatically become citizens of this country. […] Budlakoti had no idea he wasn’t an official Canadian citizen until May 2010 when he ran afoul of the law. He was sentenced to three years in prison for weapons and cocaine trafficking, and ordered deported in December 2011 based on what federal officials deemed his “serious criminality.” But India rejected him. Indian officials said Budlakoti is not a citizen and have refused Canada’s request to issue him travel documents.

Timeline: December 2003 – The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is created to address problems stemming from interdepartmental collaboration between Customs and Revenue Canada, Citizenship and Immigration Canada, and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, the three departments which previously oversaw border security and immigration enforcement. June 2012 – The Protecting Canada’s Immigration Systems Act increases CBSA powers to detain, interrogate, and deport immigrants and refugee claimants. After an initial appearance before the Immigration and Refugee Board, detained individuals, including children, may be held for several months before a hearing, and refugee claimants from designated “safe countries” (countries deemed free from humanitarian abuses) are denied the right of appeal. […] July 2014 – Volker Turk, Director of International Protection for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, issues a statement criticizing Canada’s immigration and refugee detainment practices, particularly the CBSA practice of housing well over one-third of detainees in provincial prisons.
